Measuring and Optimizing

Color can't be measured!

Color is actually a sensation and is based on the brain's ability to process impulses from the eyes. The concept of color measurement is relative to the illuminant. One must correllate the color sensitivity of a standard "viewer" to the mathematical values captured by color measurement devices.

In 1976 the Commision Internationale de l´Eclairage (CIE) developed the L*a*b* model, from which all color management concepts have been derived.

Color measurement devices must natively, or in the communicating software, capture / convert to the L*a*b* standard. basICColor developed a measurement and communications tool which in many cases produces more corresponding results than those of the original manufacturers. The application is known as basICColor catch. It exchanges spectral data values with corresponding L*a*b*, densitometry, or RGB/CMYK system value correlation. The resulting data is critical to several color process operations, including ICC profile building, process control, quality control and color communication.

Unfortunately, measurement data often contain color measurement errors or printing errors or other artifacts (eg. nonuniformity). Before profiling those errors have to be corrected and optimized. For this purpose basICColor improve is the best solution.
